There's a whole little world going on in this one! A wonderfully playful handwoven Persian Soumak Kilim, absolutely bursting with colour, animals, birds and tiny geometric motifs. One of those rugs you could spend hours looking at and still keep discovering something new.
Set against a warm natural ivory ground, three striking hot pink medallions run through the centre, framed by intricate geometric detailing in deep navy, terracotta and ochre. Each medallion is filled with its own little collection of animals, birds and colourful symbols, while the surrounding field is absolutely packed with miniature creatures in every direction.
Look closely and you'll spot all sorts of characters. Long-necked birds, little goats, deer, horses and what appear to be roosters, all woven in brilliant shades of fuchsia, cobalt blue, emerald green, mustard, turquoise, dusty pink and deep burgundy. Some are wonderfully recognisable, while others are delightfully abstract. It's a proper menagerie!
The borders are just as much fun, with repeating floral and geometric motifs in navy, bright pink, turquoise and warm earthy tones. They frame the wonderfully busy central design beautifully, bringing a little order to all that organised chaos.
These highly decorative pictorial Soumak rugs are sometimes referred to as Noah's Ark rugs because of the abundance of animals woven throughout their designs. Rather than a traditional repeating floral pattern, the whole piece feels almost like an illustrated story, with each little figure adding its own bit of personality.
Handwoven in Iran using a combination of wool and silk, the Soumak weaving technique creates a flatter, beautifully textured surface without the heavy pile of a traditional knotted Persian rug. The intricate woven detailing gives the design a wonderful tactile quality, while the silk accents add a subtle sheen to the colourful motifs.
Despite its traditional roots, there's something brilliantly contemporary about this one. Those almost cartoon-like animals, electric pinks and unexpected colour combinations give it a playful, slightly psychedelic folk-art feel. A proper belter alongside mid-century furniture, black leather, chrome, dark woods or a more minimal interior where all those tiny characters can do the talking.
Colourful, chaotic and just the right side of bizarre. A proper conversation piece with so much personality, and absolutely no chance of getting bored looking at it.
Professionally cleaned and ready for its next home.
