Mahin
A seriously special handwoven Persian Soumak Kilim, absolutely packed with colour, animals, birds and tiny tribal figures. This is one of those rugs you could stare at for days and still keep spotting something new.
Woven across a warm natural ivory ground, three large geometric medallions run through the centre in deep navy, dusty pink and warm terracotta, surrounded by an incredible cast of deer, goats, birds, insects and other animals in almost every direction. The borders are just as detailed, filled with bold geometric motifs in navy, turquoise, ochre, rust, pink and red.
These highly decorative pictorial Soumak rugs are sometimes referred to as “Noah’s Ark” rugs because of the abundance of animals woven throughout the design. Rather than a formal repeating pattern, the whole piece feels almost like an illustrated story, deeply celebratory of nature, family and tribal life.
Handwoven in Iran using a combination of wool and silk, the Soumak technique creates a flatter, beautifully textured surface without the heavy pile of a traditional knotted Persian rug. The silk detailing gives parts of the design a lovely subtle sheen and helps those tiny motifs really pop.
Despite all that traditional symbolism, there’s something brilliantly contemporary about this one. The almost naive, graphic animals and unexpected colour combinations give it a playful, folk-art quality that would look incredible alongside modern furniture, chrome, dark woods, bold artwork or a more eclectic interior.
A proper conversation piece and completely individual. So much fun.
Professionally cleaned and ready for its next home.
